Dunhill 1949 "DRR" Bruyere Chubby Liverpool

Dunhill was very fond of "chubby" versions of classical shapes, which they executed most notably in the LB, LBS, 127 and 126 shapes. But here is an entirely unique (and undoubtedly handmade) chubby, this one a Liverpool, with a powerful rounded billiard bowl, and a quite extraordinary long, tubular shank, whose shape is completed by a fine handcut vulcanite taper bit with ivory dot. What justified the originality and attention paid to this pipe is the remarkable straight grain that surrounds the bowl and extends down the shank. Every more interesting is the color. Rather than the deep red of the very early Bruyeres, or the "candy apple" red of the later ones, this pipe pays homage to the early French pipes; indeed, the color is what is called "French Red," a kind of russet that had great richness and depth. It was clearly a labor of love by a talented pipe maker, and worthy of its "DRR" grade. It's in superb condition as well, with only a tiny bit of darkening around the rim, and slightly weak factory nomenclature.
