DESCRIPTION: 1998 (PH) Unsmoked; While just a personal thing, if I was forced to select my top five ‘desert island’ briar carvers, S. Bang would definitely be high on my list. S. Bang always made a fine pipe, but when Per Hansen and Ulf Noltensmeier came on board back in the 80′s, S. Bang became elevated amongst the most sought after pipes in the world. The firm goes to fairly great pains to avoid discussing which carver made an individual pipe, the idea being that a briar is ‘an S. Bang’, and that’s that. Of course, human nature being what it is, a collector wants as much information on a substantial purchase as he or she can get. Weighing S. Bang’s desires against the wishes of our customers, we came up with a compromise; we won’t tell you who carved this, but his initials are ‘Per Hansen’ (whoops!). While not quite as rare as a verified Yeti sighting, a horn isn’t a shape that S. Bang produces with great frequency. Having said that, when they make a horn, you can count on it being a superb specimen. This horn breaks a tiny bit with S. Bang’s tendency towards precise symmetry, with the plane on the left side being allowed a slightly greater visual presence, a decision that I personally love, due to the added dimension. A softly domed rim, bristling with a bengal striations, presides over a dazzling display of cross cut on the side, and take a peek at the birdseye on the front panel/underside of the shank! Created in 1998, this collector’s piece arrived to us (and hence will arrive to you) in an unsmoked condition. Enjoy!
