Astley's Diamond-Shanied Bent Billiard by Charatan (?)

One of the nicest Astley's I have ever seen. I suspect it was made by Charatan around 1950. The pipe is dignified and imposing, with a large billiard bowl, and an extra-long diamond shank, which rises to meet the hand cut curved saddle bit. It was cut from an excellent piece of briar and has rich color.

Astley's Straight Grained Large Billiard by Bill Ashton-Taylor (?)

Astley's was a very high end London pipe store located not far from Dunhill in the Burlington Arcade. It closed two years ago, victim of a shrinking local pipe market Founded before the turn of the last century, Astley's purchased the best production from Barling, Dunhill, Charatan, and in later years from Upshall and Bill Taylor following his departure from Dunhill. This imposing piece was almost certainly made by Bill Taylor, as it has one of his patented "Ashtonite" bits, consisting of a blend of vulcanite and acrylic, one that has the comfort of the former with the oxidation resistance of the latter. It's carved from a wonderful piece of briar, and its very large billiard bowl has excellent straight grain coverage. The shank is subtly tapered, and the pipe has a very vital and energetic profile. Condition is first rate in all regards.
