David Wagner "Baff" Custom Straight Grain Apple
David's remarkable eye for briar, and restrained yet elegant design sense are immediately visible in this graceful apple, whose bowl is embraced by the excellent straight grain, which likewise continues down the tubular shank. David makes especially good bits from the finest available quality of vulcanite rod, and with internally tapered teflon tenons, a 3.75 mm lip. The quality of execution is impeccable. and it promises to be a remarkable smoker.

David Wagner of Baff Pipes is a young Austrian pipe maker, an autodidact, of formidable talent. Thanks to the internet, he is very "literate" in pipe design. This, together with his excellent technical skills and good design sense, is allowing him to make great strides very quickly indeed. If proof of this proposition be needed, it is herewith supplied in this unique yet classical apple. Inspired in part by Barling's famous apples, and in part springing from his own creativity, the pipe's bowl shows an interesting asymmetry, with a forward center of gravity and a plateaux rim. From the rear-most portion of the heel emerges the long, tubular shank whose diameter is precisely that needed to counterbalance the bowl's visual mass, and is neatly finished with a superb handcut cumberland vulcanite mouthpiece with Delrin tenon. The graining is excellent, following and enhancing the lines of the pipe. This is a very promising young man, of great personal warmth and charm, who has a bright future.
