Dunhill 1960 Bruyere ODA Apple Shape 806 Gold Mounted
The shape 806 Apple is one of the most felicitously shaped in the ODA series. It is almost perfectly proportioned, so its considerable size becomes imposing and dignified, rather than slightly absurd. This example is from the "golden years," when Dunhill was still making pipes much as they had since the early 1920's. It is densely grained, and has rich old-style Bruyere color that is almost luminous, and and excellent handcut taper bit.
As such it was an excellent choice for ornamentation by the late, great Bruce Horne, of Santa Barbara, California. He crafted a simple, elegant 14k gold band that weighs three grams, and is removable. The band is entirely decorative; the wood, nomenclature and finish are perfectly intact.
So at the end of the day, we have a first rate ODA, whose value is further enhanced with a top grade, hand made gold band. Condition is top notch in all regards.
Dunhill 1961 Root ODA Shape 806 Apple Straight Grain
A lovely ODA apple of considerable grace and wonderful proportions, obviously cut by hand from a fine piece of Calabrian plateaux briar. Were it not for the fact that the straight grain peters out a bit at the back of the bowl, this would surely have been graded a DRA or above. There is some darkening around the rim, but the pipe is otherwise in first rate condition in all regards. One of the nicest post-War ODA I've seen.
