Dunhill 1923 Bruyere "Ao" Grade Shape 59

The year 1923 was the first in which Dunhill stopped using French turned bowls, and made his pipes entirely in-house. Hence this pipe is of some historical importance, especially because it carries an unusual 1914 Patent number referring to the innertube, a device which Dunhill employed from his earliest days. In addition, it shows the striking sculptural lines that characterized the earliest pipes, with a rounded bowl that is canted forward on a stout, tapered shank with particularly clear definition between the two shapes, as well as a symmetrically tapered, natural rubber bit with semi-orific button and ivory dot. The bowl is so light that I suspect it may have been cut from Algerian rather than the Calabrian briar that was used in later pipes.

This is, of course, the famous shape 59 billiard in its primordial form, here made by hand rather than by machine, and one with a Group 5 tobacco capacity, very large for the day, when most pipes were of a modern Group 2-3 size to conserve the extremely expensive tobacco.

The stampings are razor sharp, and the pipe is in quite remarkable condition.

Dunhill 1930 Bruyere Shape 59 Billiard

Dunhill had been making its own pipes entirely in-house for just eight years when this piece was turned. It is the famous Shape 59 billiard; but in those years, it was a rather large pipe and quite stout and forthright, especially through the shank. It's cut from very densely grained Calabrian briar with excellent birdseye, especially on the right side.

The fit and finish of this pipe are better than virtually any post-War pipe, bespeaking the enormous skill of the apprentice-trained craftsmen and the level of perfection that Dunhill demanded of them, and received in full measure.

It was purchased by a distinguished collector some 30 years ago from a Dublin tobacconist who had had the pipe in his shop for the previous 40 years. It's in perfect, unsmoked condition and comes complete with original innertube.

It is very rare to find an unsmoked Dunhill from this period, and for the Dunhill aficionado, provides a benchmark against which to consider pre-smoked pipes, as well as a thing of beauty in its own right.

Dunhill 1959 Shell Meerschaum Lined Shape 59 Billiard

The meerschaum-lined pipe enjoyed two waves of popularity, the first in the 1930's, when Barling, Dunhill, Charatan and other British makers introduced them to the market. The design reappeared after the war, in the late 50's and early '60's. It is an excellent design for the smoker. The meerschaum is absortive, passing heat and moisture quickly to the briar, which disperses it more slowly. Moreover, meerschaum requires no breaking in, and does not need a cake. The result is a notably cool, dry and sweet smoke. This is an excellent example, with deeply blasted Algerian briar with a spray of ring grain on one side, and excellent color. It has a nice handcut fishtail bit. If you purchase it, I predict that it will soon be among your favorite pipes. Condition is first rate in all regards.

Dunhill 1967 Tanshell Shape 59 Billiard

A classic Tanshell billiard whose shape dates to Dunhill's earliest days, this pipe shows an excellent blast, old-fashioned Tanshell color, and notably well balanced proportions. Note especially the slight forward cant of the bowl, which lends the pipe an extra measure of dynamism. It's in first rate condition in all regards.
