The Magnum, made only between 1924 and 1925, is the holy grail for Dunhill collectors. There are less than 50 in existence. In many ways, it represents the apogee of Dunhill's pipe making. It was cut by hand from the finest (and largest) pieces of old Algerian briar plateaux, deeply sandblasted over many hours, and carefully finished to a degree of skill achieved only recently by the best of the Danish hand carvers. It is a gargantuan pipe, but so well proportioned that it acquires dignity and substance, rather than looking cartoonish. This example is unusual in that Dunhill inserted a briar sleeve in the bowl in 1939. I suspect this was to reduce the tobacco capacity to the point where the pipe was smokable by normal humans, as otherwise it would hold an absurd amount of tobacco, and require and an absurdly long time to smoke. Condition is impeccable.
