Dunhill 1939 Root Tapered Long-Stemmed Apple

Alfred Dunhill was extremely proud of the Root finish, introduced in 1931. In the boxes in which these pipes were supplied in this period was a note from him that read as follows: "The Dunhill Root briar is, to my knowledge, the finest pipe that has ever been made. All my years of experience suggest to me no likely or possible improvement. In introducing it to the smoker, I cannot help feeling the pride of achievement--the climax, perhaps, of a life's work." Clearly, Alfred was a man not heavily burdened by modesty. But it is certainly true that special care was lavished on the Root pipes in terms of quality of briar, design and finish. The present pipe is an excellent example. It has a beautiful, nearly spherical Apple shaped bowl, which has surprisingly nice straight grain on one side and birdseye on the other. From the rear of the bowl emerges a tapered shank, whose shape is further continued by the handcut "Cumberland" vulcanite bit. It's a very elegant, classic pipe of impeccable quality. And it appears virtually unsmoked. I will also include a copy of Alfred's original note.
