Dunhill 1960 Root ODA 848
The Root finish pipes from the early '60's are in my judgment among the most desirable of the post-War pipes. Dunhill seems to have lavished particular care upon them, both in the selection of the briar (which at that time still came from Calabria as Dunhill had first specified in the '30's) and in the cut and overall execution. ODA's in the root finish are especially to be cherished. This example, in the handsome 848 model, shows excellent grain and color, and has a sort of electricity about it that arises from the quality of materials and execution. It is in first rate condition in all regards, and even comes with the original box and sleeve, bespeaking the appreciation of the original owner.

Dunhill 1961 Root ODA 848
An elegant and handsome example of this striking shape, cut across the grain of the Calabrian briar to reveal fields of birdseye on either side of the very large Yachtsman bowl. Outstanding condition in all regards.

Dunhill 1973 Bruyere ODA 848
The Yachtsman or canted Dublin is one of my favorite shapes in the ODA line. It is very well balanced and surprisingly graceful for being so large a pipe, rather like a Bentley Continental Coupe. This example is a rather unusual deep Bruyere color, resembling the earliest pipes from the Duke Street workshop.

Alfred Dunhill Shell Briar ODA 848 S EX12 "1965/72" Estate
EX
A randomly placed „EX“ occasionally found on either the reverse shank side of smooth finished pipes or on the bottom of Shell shanks signifies that the pipe was given in exchange pursuant to Dunhill´s one year guarantee. One might speculate that this stamping began with the formal commencement of the guarantee policy in 1921 but Dunhill had informally exchanged pipes for some time preceding, probably since inception, and it is well possible that that the EX stamping arose during that earlier period.
In 1943 the year of exchange was also added to the stamp, e.g. “EX.43”. The reason for this stamp refinement is unknown but it must have reflected a very real problem given the difficulty during the war period to tool new stamps. On suspects that the stamping change has something to do with war time England being engulfed with young American servicemen seemingly bent on putting Dunhill´s guaranty policy to the test. Consider how many new Dunhill pipes in those war years must have been broken in over the Continent in drafty B17s and the like.
