Dunhill 1966 Tanshell ODA 836

One is inclined to dismiss the extra large "ODA" series as a kind of wretched excess, appealing to those who value size over quality. But upon careful examination, it turns out that some ODA's are so well proportioned and carefully executed that they acquire a kind of dignified grandeur, like an old Bentley. This is surely one such. It is a shape 836, the famous "four square," here executed in the Sardinian briar that Dunhill specified for the Tanshell finish. It responds especially well to sandblasting, revealing a deep, highly detailed surface of considerable interest and complexity. The Tanshell is also interesting in that it colors with smoking rather like meerschaum, to become a rich reddish bronze. This one is lightly smoked, and has the deep color of the original tanshell finish, much more nuanced than the later flat tan color. It's in virtually pristine condition.
