Dunhill 1976 Shape 622 Bent Billiard

Perhaps the most coveted post-War shape made by Dunhill, the 622 from 1976 is the largest standard shape the company ever made. According to the leading Dunhill authority, John Loring, who has written an excellent article on this shape, Dunhill came across some very large, very high quality blocks in its workshop, and decided to made correspondingly large pipes to clear out its old inventory. From these blocks, a very few "jumbo" 622's were made, whose bowl heights were anywhere from 2.25 inches to 2.875". This pipe is equal to the largest one in Loring's collection at 2.875" (7.35 cm). The bowl's shape is like that of the old LC, which in turn is derived from a much older French design (see above). It has a long cylindrical shank, and a nicely executed handcut German vulcanite saddle bit whose slim profile helps to offset the mass of the bowl. This pipe is also a showcase for birdseye on both sides of the bowl, a crosscut but not precisely on center. But no matter. It's in virtually pristine condition, and an astonishing pipe of impeccable quality and extreme rarity.
