The serious Dunhill collector knows that especially with more recently carved pieces, it is vital to scrutinize even high end examples to be sure that their quality is commensurate with their nomenclature. I'm happy to say that this pipe can withstand the most careful inspection. It is marked as a "Collector HT," which is technically redundant since all Collectors are hand made; so we must interpret the markings to mean that it is a Collector of special quality. Indeed, it is surprising that it was not marked as a DR, since it's almost entirely covered in very fine straight grain. Perhaps the marketing wizards who now run Dunhill were uncharacteristically embarrassed to mark it as a "Collector HT DR.
It's cut as a very large Dublin, larger than most ODA's and with notably thick walls. The bowl is canted slightly backward on the rather long tubular shank, and it is of course fitted with a substantial, handcut German vulcanite taper bit.
So if this pipe strikes a resonance, you may be assured that it is a piece of genuine quality, not simply one that gets by solely on reputation and nomenclature. You may also be assured that it has been carefully restored to excellent condition in all regards.
