Barling c. 1940 Saddle Bit Apple "L"

This pipe, marked as a shape 1302, was made early in the so-called "Nichols" period when grading and more complete nomenclature, including shape numberes, was introduced just before the War. It is a very well cut, naturally finished apple, with tapered shank and long handcut vulcanite saddle bit. The briar is an attractive amber-brown color, of Algerian provenance (as were all pre-Transition Barlings), and has dense grain, bespeaking its origin from a block of high-grade plateaux. A medium sized pipe, it is marked as an "L" (large in Barling's rather optimisitic system) and has a Group 3 capacity.
