Barling c. 1950 "Special" Pot Shape 352b

Mr. Barling was something of a contrarian, with very strong convictions about how pipes should be made and the shapes into which they should be shaped. He had a special fondness for the Pot shape, not unbearably popular in the world of pipes, but distinguished by its very large capacity, and its unique affinity for ful flavored English mixtures, which benefit from the large surface area for combustion that this shape affords.

This is a very special example in both senses of the term, first because it is in fact graded as a "Special," to denote the unique graining, color and quality of the Algerian plateaux form which it was carved, and because it has a rather unusual (for Barling) extra long, tapered and curved bit. There is yet another sense it which it is special--the quality of finish and execution, normally very high in Barlings, but quite extraordinary in this piece.

There are remnants of the original Barling cross on the bit, and the condition is otherwise close to pristine. All in all, a pipe that deserves your "special" consideration.

Gruss Arno
