"Long, LONG story behind this one. This is the first Talbert Briar made here in our US workshop. I realize it's number 6 above, but that's just because I worked through the pic sets backward. So, it's a bit historic in that respect. The design is taken from a Talbert version of the Rameses shape so popular with collectors of high grades. Some time back I did a commission which called for three of these - Two fairly conventional, and the third open to interpretation... Ergo, this pipe design. I was working on the Pfeifenigma project at the time, and built this shape somewhat around a series of maps and paintings I was doing that would have incorporated some riddles for the buyer to solve, where lying the pipe down in the proper orientation on the drawing would let each point on the pipe shape touch key clue elements in the picture, to help solve the riddle and get the buyer some sort of extra goodie, be it a tamper, stand, or whatever. That project fell by the wayside due to time constraints and the pressure of life in Brittany, but the original version of this pipe was popular and ended up being a favorite in the 2006 pipe gallery.
When it came time to make the first pipe in the states, it was an obvious design choice. This time around, I made a handmade tamper to go with it, probably a $100+ value on its own but included with this pipe, which is quite detailed. The upper portion of the tamper is hand-carved and stained to match the pipe, while it has a decorative cumberland lower half to match the pipe's stem, and a turned morta tamping end as a black visual connection to the black sandblasted pipe bowl. The pipe itself is a gorgeous thing, very dramatic, with large sculpted bowl, a stunning bird's-eye-covered underside, sweeping lines that flow into the handcut German cumberland stem, and (of course) easy pipecleaner passage as well. I have never believed that fancy pipe shapes were any excuse for poor engineering! I will let the photos do the talking regarding the finely detailed ring grain sandblast. Just a really nice, very unique standout piece for any collection, with quite a bit of historical Talbert provenance, to boot."
