"I've only made a few of these shapes in the past, but improved methods should allow us to efficiently do a lot more in future. I really like the shape - I'm fond of billiards anyway, and these square-shanked versions add the practicality of being self-sitting, so you can put your pipe down anywhere without it falling over. This pipe is a classic example of the "One blah side, one fantastic side" effect, with the grain on one side being pretty dull and the other being a terrific display of tight, contrasted bird's-eye. The decorative wood band in the stem has a bit of history behind it, too. It is solid teak, taken from the old wooden decking of the battleship USS North Carolina. A few years back, they were selling off quantities of this material during a refit of the ship, and Larry of Pipe & Pint bought some of it for possible use in a themed pipe project. I never had the chance to do anything with it over in France, but I hope to finally get to work on it eventually, and this was a test run just to see how the material looked once fitted and polished. A small piece of US naval history!"
