Grading "F"

Vom Holz ist die erste Pfeife super . Der Kopf und das Mundstück, nee da kann ich nicht zustimmen. Ich denke da hat einer experimentiert. Wenn ich diese Pfeife anschaue fehlt mir das abgerundete Gefühl (meine Meinung). Nur ein anderes Mundstück und alles wäre Ok. Ich hätte auch eine Idee.

Ganz einfach das Mundstück ist mir zu einfach. Als wenn einer keine Lust mehr hat und nur fertig werden will.

Peter Matzhold 1987 "Cup and Saucer" Straight Grain

Peter Matzhold from Austria is finally receiving the recognition he deserves as one of the world's great pipe makers. His designs are disciplined yet daring; his workmanship impeccable; and he has found a way to obtain briar of remarkable quality from a small village in Italy where he travels one a year by car to select his years' supply. Peter carved the present example 21 years ago, when he'd already been carving for 9 years, and it found a place in the late, lamented Vienna Pipe Museum before being sold to a collector upon closure of the Museum. It's a variant on the old "cup and saucer" shape so beloved of Charatan and its master carver Barry Jones, Here, however, rather than the shank forming a kind of shelf under the bowl, it gives the impression of a hand reaching out to embrace and support the back of the bowl. The visual sense conveyed is of two separate pieces fused together. The large bell Dublin bowl is covered by superb, narrow straight grain, very lightly stained, and the straight grain continues down the shank. It has a graceful handcut vulcanite saddle bid with subtly asymmetrical boss, which echoes the shape of the bowl/shank juncture. All in all, a subtle, eminently beautiful pipe of no little grace, executed with impeccable skill. The pipe is lightly smoked, and in first rate condition.

Peter Matzhold Bent Dublin Pre Grading

I suspect that this pipe came from the late, lamented Vienna Pipe Museum, which regrettably closed and sold off its wonderful collection. It was cut before Peter introduced his grading system, but no doubt would have been an E or higher, perhaps even his CU (copper) grade. Its very large canted Dublin bowl with notably thick walls sprouts a rather graceful tapered shank, to which one of Peter's exemplary handcut saddle bits is fitted. The naturally finished wood shows top notch grain all around the bowl. Quality of execution cannot be faulted, nor can the condition.

Peter Matzhold Bent Volcano

The Austrian carver Peter Matzhold is producing some of the finest handmade pipes available today, especially considering their price. His designs are original, refined and elegant, yet still sprightly and visually intriguing. Here we have a shape of which Peter is especially fond, a bent Volcano with long, tapered shank with arched top and flat bottom. He makes an annual trip to a small villiage in the Italian mountains, and selects his blocks directly from the cutter. As a result, his quality of wood is superb. With his thirty years of experience, his quality of execution is the match for the wood. A first rate pipe, in first rate condition.
