Seems like pipes of the Liverpool variety are far and few between. That's kind of a shame once you've the opportunity to see just how gorgeous they can be. Take this piece by American pipe maker Rad Davis for example. From the modestly sized and handsomely turned bowl to the round, pencil shank stem, this pipe is just perfectly proportioned and excellently balanced. Especially considering the stem, which is here just a hair longer than what one would expect generally from your classic Liverpool. In this instance, particularly because of the way the bit fishtails, I think the lengthy stem adds wonderful character to the piece. The high contrast stain Rad favors here shows off some killer flame grain. -- Ted Swearingen
