Joura Square-Shanked Bent Billiard Grade 7
LIke his countryman Rainer Barbi, Joura is largely self-taught. While his pipes are somewhat sombre, they are also of impeccable quality of materials and execution. Here is a very dignified and substantial billiard variation, to whose generous and well-shaped bowl is attached a stout square stem, and an especially nice handcut and ornamented saddle bit. It is not clear to me why it received the relatively low grade it did. as the grain is first rate and without flaw. It was lightly smoked, and in outstanding condition. It promises to be a first rate smoker, especially with English mixtures, though it could certainly do credit to Virginias and flakes if one but asks it nicely.

Karl Joura "Infiniti" grade Blowfish
Karl Joura was a German sports instructor in 1974 when he began making pipes for his own pleasure. Never seeking nor receiving outside instruction, by 1979, he'd given up his day job to become a full time pipe maker. The past 5 years have seen him enter strongly upon the world stage, as his skills have improved and his designs have become more innovative, while still honoring their classical roots. His pipes tend to be compact and powerful, but always brilliantly executed from the finest briar. This is the most impressive Joura I have seen. It's a modified blowfish, with a tear-drop shaped bowl and faceted heel, with a ridge that extends onto the bottom of the characteristically notched handcut vulcanite bit. The graining is superb, radiating outward from the back of the bowl towards the heel, and giving rise to an impressive field of birdseye on the bottom. It richly deserves his highest "Infiniti" grade, and originally sold for $1500.

Karl Joura Grade 6 Bent Calvados--Unsmoked
Just slightly below the Infiniti in grade and price, this is an entirely charming piece. It has a nicely rounded, "pleasingly plump" apple/brandy bowl, whose mass is offset by the well articulated shank, which flows pleasingly into the heel. The grain is dense and thin, the color a light amber brown, and the unusual (for Karl) tapered mouthpiece is handcut from variegated "Cumberland" vulcanite.

Karl Joura Inifini Grade Bent "Calvados"
A very stylish, almost playful rendering of the apple/brandy shape, taking especially good advantage of the excellent grain of his briar. Note how the grain follows every contour of bowl and shank; note also the dynamism of the shape, with the forward center of gravity, counterbalanced by the clarity and definition of the curved shank with its flat bottom, and completed by the delicate and elegant notched bit. The fit and finish are impeccable.

Karl Heinz Joura Smooth Bent Pot (Infinity)
Zitat:
"A superbly shaped bent brandy shape from the great German pipe maker. The stunning grain is perfectly mated to the superlative shape. Tight vertical grain runs the circumference of the bowl and up the shank whereas exceptional birdseye covers the bottom of the bowl. The cheeks extend all the way to the bottom of the shape, and make somewhat of a boat keel in the process.
