Barling Pre-War Quaint EXEXEL Size

From the small font in the curved Barling's (over) Make, and the absence of any size designation, we know this pipe was made prior to 1940. Yet it has the distinctive "tribal" style carving of the famous Jamieson, most commonly seen in post-War pipes. It is a very large saddle-bit billiard with an unusual hexagon bowl, each facet of which has vertical carvings, a rounded bottom and an apple-like tapered rim. The briar is richly colored and densely grained. Though the Barling cross has been lost along the way, the bit is unmistakably original to the pipe, cut by hand from the finest German rod stock.

Quaints are perhaps the most collectible of all Barlings, especially in the EXEXEL size. These factors, combined with the fact that the pipe is almost 80 years old, make it especially desireable. Condition is first rate but for somewhat weak stampings.An fine pipe, worthy of the name.
