Barling Pre-War/Transition Era EXEXEL Billiard Shape 6106
From the distinctive font of the curved "Barling's [over] Make" stamping, we know that this lovely pipe was made before the War. And a lovely example it is, notably graceful in shape and proportion, and with straight grain entirely covering one side of the bowl. In latter days, it would certainly have been marked as a Guinea Grain EXEXEL.
How then did it come to be sold in the Transition period? The answer is that when the new owners acquired the company in 1960, they found fully finished and partially finished pipes from all eras of Barling's history, and promply sold them to generate cash flow while they tooled up for new production, after first marking them with an additional digit.
That little digit allows you to acquire a very old, notably high quality pipe in superb condition at a most attractive price.
