Zitat:
"Jürgen Moritz

Jürgen's love of pipes came at the young age of 12 when he would have to hide his pipes under his bed so his mother would not find them. Some years later while studying social science he took a part time job at a tobacconist. Working at this shop Jürgen began to refurbish and study the pipes he would work on, it's there Jürgen began to understand the inner workings and engineering of what it takes to make a quality pipe.

Jürgen began making pipes in 2003 with the encouragement from collector Jörg Lehmann and with the help and early guidance from Cornelius Mänz. After a successful show in Chicago and Rheinbach in 2007 Jürgen became a full time maker. You can see the Danish influence in Jürgen's style, yet his style and unique shapes are very much his own. "

Zitat Ende.

Juergen Moritz Bent Dublin Sitter with Boxwood--Unsmoked

Wandering the aisles of the Chicago pipe show, one's eye is drawn here and there, sometimes, by a color, sometimes by an outline, or sometimes by a momentary gestalt, an image of a whole pipe that somehow strikes a resonance. That is precisely what happened when I passed Juergen Moritz's table and saw this pipe. A talented German pipe maker and student of Rainer Barbi, he had a number of excellent pieces on the table, but it was this one that drew and held my attention. As I looked at it more closely, and examined its details, I realized that it reminded me strongly in its shape, esthetics and detailing, of an early Sixten Ivarsson pipe. I cross-examined Juergen in some detail to find out if it had been a direct inspiration. He told me, and I believe him, that he had never seen a Sixten pipe, though he knew Sixten's reputation and had seem a few photographs. Rather, he explained, the shape of the pipe gradually emerged as he worked with a rather unusual piece of briar, and at every step in the process, seemed to dictate how it should be further shaped and finished. Indeed, after the bowl was roughed out, he realized that it needed greater length in the shank. He first thought to use bamboo, but realized that it demanded a finer and more elegant shape, one that reflected the lines of the bowl and shank, and so resolved upon a piece of boxwood set off from the shank with a vulcanite band. Moreover, to preserve the purity of line, he devised a fascinating variation on the saddle bit, one in which the saddle is inset into the boxwood extension, and only partially visible in side view.

This whole reasoning process reminded me very strongly of what Lars had told me about his father's pipe making procedures. He certainly had a repertoire of favorite shapes which he refined over the years. But the way in which those shapes were expressed, and the ornaments and refinements applied in their execution, were determined by how the pipe itself emerged and developed under his hands. So at the end of the day, Juergen's pipe was not an imitation of Sixten's work, nor even an hommage, but rather arose as a kind of parallel evolution.

I regard it as an extraordinary piece of pipe making, from the design, to the staining, to the quality of briar and the skill of execution, not to mention the not inconsiderable elegance and refinement. It bespeaks a pipe carver who not only has superb technical chops, but a first rate sense of design, balance and proportion. It is both classical and modern, innovative and conservative. If Juergen continues to make pipes of this quality, he will soon emerge as one of the next generation of super stars.

Needless to say, it's in perfect condition; and while I have looked at it longingly, I have hidden it away from myself in the recesses of my cabinet, swathed in its simple black leather sleeve, and awaiting its new owner.
